While writing a text, the user often makes mistakes and typos. It may be an official document or a simple instruction. It is desirable to correct errors immediately, but it may happen that during retyping they slip away and remain unnoticed. In order to correct this situation there are many different programs and services. It is most convenient to correct errors in a text editor. Such functionality is provided in Microsoft Office. If you use Libreoffice, you can also count on help with misspellings.
Text checking in Libreoffice works by default. The user can notice how errors and typos are underlined automatically with a red line, about the same can be seen in MS Office. In order for the spell checker to work properly, it is necessary to select the language of the text in the document. To do this, select the text, find the text language indicator at the bottom of the window, approximately in the middle and click on it, then select the language:
Next, spelling errors will be correctly highlighted in the text. If you want to specifically go through all the errors, open the "Tools" menu and select the spell check function. The program will detect errors, typos and offer the user to correct them.
To accept the changes suggested by the program, click the "Replace" button. You can add the word to the dictionary so that it is no longer highlighted, or just skip it. However, it is worth realizing that Libreoffice's spell checker works rather primitively. If you want a more accurate check, you can use a special extension LanguageTool. It significantly expands the program's functionality in terms of spelling.
It is an open-source product that can be used together with LibreOffice for free. Downloading the extension is very easy - you need to go to the website and select the necessary version.
Once the extension is downloaded, double-click on it. This will launch the LibreOffice extension manager, where you need to confirm the installation.
Once the extension is installed, simply restart Libreoffice. Now when working with text documents, you will be able to notice not only red lines but also blue lines. This is the extension you have installed working. To see exactly what the error is, just right click on the underlined text.
You can see from the example above that the extension indicates a missing comma. LibreOffice spell checker works by default, you just need to select the correct language. If at some point you need to disable spell checking in your text, just uncheck the "Auto Spell Check" function located in the "Tools" menu.
